DIY Shower Cap Fail

One day I decided to try something that I had not done before and that was a DIY shower cap. The elastic band in my shower cap just broke and this was maybe my third one in less than two months. I was ready to find a durable shower cap, so I searched different stores and could not find a good quality one. Then I said, “If I can't find one, I'll make one myself.” I typically say that before I start any DIY project. So, I went to YouTube University and watched as many DIY shower cap videos as possible until I was confident enough to make my own. I had an excellent design in my head for the shower cap, but my execution did not match it at all. I wanted a shower cap with a ribbon to tie the cap securely instead of using an elastic band. The ribbon design was a good idea; however, I would need durable and waterproof material. Unfortunately, the shower cap only lasted about one week. The vinyl fuse was peeling off and then it was no longer effective.
After this epic failure, I knew I had to redeem myself. So, I took the shower cap apart and made a new one with a clear lightweight shower liner. Read my blog post titled “I redeemed myself, shower cap success" to see the new and improved shower cap.
Check out my YouTube video below to see how I made this shower cap and learn from my mistakes. If you are interested in how I made this shower cap, check out the instructions below.

Process
Step 1
Create the shower cap template by placing the horizontal side of the paper that's 12 inches on top of each other and pushing it upward until it measures 12 inches in length. Tape the papers together.

Step 2
With a ruler, hold one side and push the other side until you reach the edge of the paper. Use a marker to mark out the line.
Step 3
Next, grab your fabrics, fold them into rectangles, and place your shower template on the bottom left.

Step 4
Place sewing needles through the template and fabric to keep it in place. Next, cut out the fabric. There will be a total of four pieces of fabric. Two satin pieces and two cotton fabric pieces.
Step 5
Next, place the template on top of the vinyl fuse to trace the half-circle side of the template.
Step 6
Place the template on the other side and trace the perimeter of the template creating a half circle. Then cut it.
Step 7
Place the vinyl fuse you cut out on top of the other sheet of vinyl fuse and cut out another half circle. Use something heavy like your iron to keep the sheets together. Now you should have two half circle vinyl fuse sheets that create a full circle.
Step 8
Next, grab your cotton fabric. Peel off the vinyl fuse, and carefully place it on one side of the fabric.
Step 9
Place the paper from the vinyl fuse on top of the vinyl fuse and use the iron to apply it to the fabric. The vinyl fuse should adhere to the fabric after ironing.
Step 10
Repeat the process on the other side of the cotton fabric with the second piece of vinyl fuse. Cut off any excess vinyl fuse if necessary.
Step 11
If the vinyl fuse is not fully sticking to the fabric in some areas, apply more heat.
Step 12
Cut off the fabric that does not have the vinyl fuse on it if necessary.
Step 13
Next, place the cotton fabric with the vinyl fuse on top of the satin fabric. Cut off any excess satin fabric if necessary.

Step 14
Place the shiny side of the satin fabric and the side of the cotton fabric with the vinyl fuse on top of each other. The matte side of the satin fabric should be facing up.

Step 15
Then use the sewing clips to attach the fabric leaving half an inch of seam allowance from the edge. Leave a 2-inch opening to flip the fabric inside out later.
Step 16
Sew along the edges with the sewing machine.
Step 17
Now it is time to flip the fabric inside out. This may be hard to do.
Step 18
If the vinyl is wrinkly after flipping the fabric inside out, iron it again to make it smooth.

Step 19
Next, I made a drawstring for the shower cap using cotton fabric and vinyl fuse.
Step 20
Cut the vinyl fuse 1.5 inches in height x 48 inches in width.
Step 21
Cut the cotton fabric 1.5 inches in height x 48 inches in width.
Step 22
Apply the vinyl fuse to the fabric and iron on the vinyl fuse.

Step 23
Sew along the edges of the drawstring.
Step 24
Next, cut off any excess vinyl fuse if necessary.
Step 25
With chalk or a fabric marker, create a circle around the vinyl side of the fabric 2 inches from the edge for the drawstring ribbon.
Step 26
Next, sew along the chalk or marker.
Step 27
Next, cut 2 openings for the drawstring fabric 2 inches apart.
Step 28
Grab a paper clip and pull one side of it open. Next, push the open side of the paper clip into the top of the fabric creating a little hole.
Step 29
Push the paper clip into the opening of the fabric and push it through until it reaches the second opening.
Step 30
The shower cap is complete. Now, the drawstrings can be tied into a bow.
